Born in 1946, Dr. S. K. Roy obtained the B.Tech. (Hons.)
in Metallurgical Engineering in 1967 and subsequently obtained his M.Tech.
and Ph.D. in 1969 and 1976, respectively, all from the Indian Institute of
Technology, Kharagpur. Dr. Roy joined as a faculty member of the erstwhile
Metallurgical Engineering Department at the I.I.T., Kharagpur in 1970 where
presently, he is a Professor of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
department. Among his several assignments abroad, Dr. Roy worked as a
Max-Planck Fellow at the Max-Planck Institute for Steel Research,
Düsseldorf, Germany for two years (1977-1979); as a guest scientist of the
National Research Council of Italy at I.C.F.A.M., CNR, Genova for one year
(1986-87); and as Research Director (Visiting) at E.N.S.E.E.G., INPG,
Grenoble for one year (1991-92) on invitation from the National Research
Council of France. Dr. Roy has to his credit around 100 research
publications in journals of international repute. He co-authored a book on
“ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION OF METALS” with Prof. U. K. Chatterjee and Prof.
S. K. Bose,
published by Marcel Dekker, USA in 2001. He received the ‘National
Metallurgists’ Day Award of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, in
1994. The Indian Institute of Welding presented him with the H. D. Govindraj
Memorial Research Award in 1993. The NACE International, India Section
conferred on him the National Corrosion Awareness Promotion Award in 2001. A
Gold Medal of The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India was
awarded to him in 2003. His major research interests include: (i) Mineral
Beneficiation, (ii) Extraction of Nonferrous Metals, (iii) High temperature
Corrosion, (iv) Development of high temperature coatings, (v) Surface
modification by LASER surface alloying and Plasma ion implantation, (vi)
Nanostructured Materials, (vii) Electronic Materials, and (viii)
Biomaterials etc. He is a fellow of the Indian Institute of Metals, a
chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), a
Fellow of the Electrochemical Society (India), a Life member of the
Materials Research Society of India, a member of the National Association of
Corrosion Engineers (India), a Life member of the Indian Institute of
Mineral Engineers and a member of the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical
Institute of India.
